Blue Island highlighted in the magazine OnEarth!

Here's the link:
http://www.onearth.org/article/redrawing-the-american-city

Be sure to check it out. The first part of the article is about Prairie Crossing, but then there is a big part on Blue Island. The article speaks to the importance of better, more sustainable urban design.

The Friday Night Bike Crew

Come one, come all! We are looking for Lights, Helmets and Safety Vests! Well, and your kid, too...

The kids' <RED> Friday Night Bike Crew</RED> has grown and grown this year. We are now routinely getting 20 people on our weekly rides and have over 35 people who've participated in the past four months. WOW! This is a great thing. Our kids are getting exercise, learning how to get around by their own power, learning how to navigate, investigating new neighborhoods and environments, getting back to nature, and are having a lot of fun while doing it.

This is great stuff. But we have a problem....

Yep, we're already thinking about it... the Annual Fourth of July Parade!

General info:
Best Decorated Bike Contest
--Sponsored by the bike club and the Blue Island Park District--

Meet up at Hart Park at 10 am on July 4th. Bikes will be given an ABC Quick Check for safety. You can decorate your bike using the provided materials, or you can bring your own stuff from home. Remember to keep moving parts clear! (No streamers dragging behind the seat to get caught in the spokes, etc.)

Categories are 5 and under, 1st-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grade, 5th-6th grade. Prizes include gift certificates, bike lights, and bike reflectors.

All contestants (and their families) are encouraged to participate in the parade which kicks off at 11:30 am. The route is a bit over a mile long--easy for even the little ones.

Entry forms will be handed out at the end of the school year in District 130 and at local parochial schools. They will also be available at the Memorial Park Field House.

Annual Festival of Lights Parade

Come join us for the annual end-of-the-year event!

This year we were the very first group to get our entry submitted for the parade. Will that mean that we are the first "float"? Find out by joining us. <grin>

We have two meeting places this year. Little kids (and their escorts) will meet at 12056 Maple Ave (my garage) to get their bikes decorated and their lights ready at 4pm. Adult bike club members can meet up at 5 pm at Walnut and Gregory (or thereabouts... look for the bikes).

WEAR YOUR WARMEST WINTER CLOTHING AND BE SURE TO DRESS IN LAYERS!

Blue Island: St. Francis Hospital ProAm Race

Come join us for this incredibly fun day! Watch the racers as they hit speeds over 35 mph! Feel the breeze as the peloton whizzes past!

I strongly urge everyone to come out for this fantastic event. Racers are hosting all over Blue Island with families for SuperWeek, so you'll find lots of local enthusiasm for "their" racers. I can't tell you how exciting this race is. Yes, it starts early and runs late, but last year we spent the ENTIRE day (from 5am to well after 11pm) and had a BLAST!

The Annual Fourth of July Parade

Did you join us for the annual 4th of July Parade?

This is always a fun outing. Check out our festive wear and decorated bikes by clicking through to the full text link below ("Read More..."). <g>

We met at 121st and Western Ave (roughly near Thornton's) at about 10:45 am. We had a few decorations and flags available for those who were still looking for ideas.

The BIBC rode with Cub Scout Pack 3785 from St. Walters. We were also joined by the new Friday Night Bike Crew, a group of kids who go for organized rides every Friday evening. Several of the Bike Crew kids were participating in other floats in the parade (AYSO soccer, EASC swim club, etc), so we were a little light in their presence. Frank Gallegos, Leslie Gonzalez, Eddy and Jose Esparza, Cameron Jones, Jamilax Mendez, Nelson Schnieder, and the Healy kids were able to make it though.
